Baa Atoll — UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

The crown jewel for marine life lovers. Hanifaru Bay here is one of the world’s best spots to swim alongside manta rays — sometimes dozens at a time in peak season (June to November). A seaplane flight to get here, but worth every second of it.

Ari Atoll — The Diver’s Paradise

The Maldives’ most famous diving destination, with consistent whale shark sightings year-round at Dhigurah and world-class dive sites around every corner. The lagoons here are wide, shallow, and an extraordinary shade of turquoise.

Addu Atoll — The Undiscovered South

The southernmost atoll and one of the least-visited. Spectacular diving, a fascinating WWII-era British base, and the feeling of having a piece of the Maldives almost entirely to yourself. For travellers who like going where others don’t.

Even if you’ve never snorkelled before, putting your face in the water here and discovering the reef below is a life-changing five minutes. The diversity of marine life is extraordinary — and you’ll find it right off the beach, no boat required at most resorts.

A sunset cruise — even a simple one on the resort’s dhoni (traditional wooden boat) — is the kind of thing you’ll talk about for years. The sky turns every shade of orange, pink and purple, reflected in the still ocean all around you.

• 🍽️  Dine on a Sandbank

Many resorts arrange private sandbank dinners — a table set up on a tiny strip of white sand in the middle of the lagoon, surrounded by nothing but ocean. If you’re celebrating something special, there is nowhere more memorable.

When bioluminescent plankton are present (usually December to March), the water around you lights up with every movement — like swimming through a galaxy. It sounds impossible. It isn’t.

Practical Tips Before You Pack Your Bags

• Visa: Citizens of most countries receive a free 30-day visa on arrival. No application required — just show your onward ticket and proof of accommodation.
• Currency: US Dollars are widely accepted at all resorts. The local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), useful mainly on local islands.
• Getting There: Most international flights land at Velana International Airport (Malé). From there, your resort will arrange a speedboat or seaplane transfer depending on the atoll.
• Dress Code: Resort islands are fully liberal. Local islands are more conservative — pack a light scarf or cover-up for visits to inhabited islands.
• Health: No vaccinations required. The water at resorts is desalinated and safe. Bring reef-safe sunscreen — some resorts require it to protect the coral.
• Connectivity: Wi-Fi is available at all resorts, but this is genuinely a good place to put the phone away. The Maldives rewards presence.
